External Door Fitting in Guildford

We fit external doors for homeowners across Guildford, covering everything from a straightforward front door replacement to back doors, French doors and stable doors. If your current door is draughty, sticking, or just past its best, we assess the frame, measure properly and fit the new door so it sits right and performs as it should from day one.

External Doors We Fit Across Guildford

Guildford has a wide mix of property types, from Victorian terraces in Onslow Village to newer builds out towards Merrow and Burpham. We work with composite doors, solid timber doors, half-glazed front doors, back doors, stable doors and French doors. Whether you are replacing a rotting timber door on an older property or fitting a new composite on a modern home, we work with the door and frame you have and advise honestly on what will work best for your situation.

Front Doors

Strong, secure and the first thing anyone sees. We fit front doors on all property types, from straightforward replacements to non-standard openings where the frame needs attention first.

Timber Front Doors

A natural choice for period properties and homes where composite does not suit the look. We fit solid timber front doors and advise on sizes whether stock or made to measure.

Composite / uPVC Doors

Low maintenance, weather resistant and available in a wide range of styles. The most common choice for front door replacements across the areas we cover.

French Doors

Two-door sets that open outward and work well at the back of a property where you want more light and access to the garden. We fit and align both leaves so they close and lock cleanly.

Patio Doors

liding or hinged rear doors that open up a room without needing swing space. We check the frame and threshold carefully on these as the weight and movement puts more demand on the fitting.

Other External Doors

Not seeing your door type here? We fit stable doors, side access doors, bi-fold doors and more. If you are not sure what you need, tell us what you have and we will advise.

How We Fit External Doors in Guildford

Before anything else, we check the frame. On a lot of Guildford properties, particularly the older terraced and semi-detached houses, frames have shifted over the years and that affects everything. We check the rebate depth, look at whether the frame is still square, and confirm the threshold condition before agreeing on a door size. Once the door arrives, we fit it so it hangs correctly under its own weight, sits flush against the weatherstrip on all sides and closes without needing to be forced. Locks and hardware are fitted and tested, and we check the draught seal around the full perimeter before we leave.

Trusted External Door Fitters in Guildford

Ed has been fitting external doors long enough to know that the door itself is only half the job. In Guildford, a lot of the calls we get involve doors that were fitted without the frame being properly checked first. The door drops after six months, or there is a draught along the bottom that was never resolved. When Ed arrives, he checks the frame rebate before any measurements are confirmed. If the frame is sound, the fitting is straightforward. If there are issues, he tells you before the work starts, not after. External doors are significantly heavier than internal ones and hinge placement has to account for that. A door hung with hinges in the wrong position will start to pull within a year. We get it right the first time. We turn up when we say we will, we keep the work area clean and we do not leave until the door is operating properly.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

Getting Started

My current front door is sticking badly. Does that mean the frame needs replacing before a new door can be fitted?
Not necessarily. Sticking is often caused by the frame moving slightly or the door itself warping, especially on older timber doors. When we visit, we check whether the frame is still structurally sound and square. If the frame is in good condition, a new door can go straight in. If the frame has rotted or moved too far out of true, we will tell you that before any work is agreed. There is no point fitting a new door into a frame that is going to cause the same problems within a year.
How long does it take to fit an external door?
A straight replacement on a standard opening where the frame is in good condition takes around three to four hours. If the frame needs work, or if the opening is not quite square and needs packing and adjusting, it can take longer. We always assess the job properly before giving you a timeframe so there are no surprises on the day.
Do I need planning permission to replace my front door in Guildford?
In most cases, no. Standard door replacements are considered permitted development. However, if your property is in a conservation area, which covers parts of central Guildford, or if it is a listed building, there may be restrictions on what materials and styles are permitted. It is worth checking with Guildford Borough Council before ordering a door if you are in any doubt. We can advise on what we have seen approved in the area but the formal confirmation needs to come from the council.
The opening on my property looks slightly uneven. Can you still fit a new door?
Yes. Most openings are not perfectly square, particularly in older properties. We pack and adjust during the fitting process to make sure the door sits level and the gaps around the frame are even. Where the opening is significantly out, we will discuss the options with you before starting. It is rare that an opening is too far gone to work with.
What type of lock should an external door have?
For a front door, a multipoint locking system is the standard and what most insurers expect. This locks at multiple points along the door edge when you lift the handle, making it significantly more resistant to forcing than a single deadbolt. We fit and test the locking mechanism as part of the installation and make sure it operates smoothly before we leave.
What affects the cost of fitting an external door?
The main factors are the condition of the existing frame, the type and weight of the door being fitted, and whether any additional work is needed to the threshold or surrounding frame. A composite door on a solid frame in good condition is a straightforward job. A heavy timber door on a frame that needs remedial work before fitting will take longer and cost more. We give you a clear price before starting so you know exactly what you are paying for.
